Source Sentinel's work stems from research underway at SUNY-ESF, one of the only United States institutions with programs focused solely on the study and application of natural resources and the environment. SUNY-ESF is one of two facilities in the country with the capacity to analyze large numbers of algal toxins and the sensors to monitor for them.
Another aspect of the research involves developing rapid analytical technology to detect contaminants in water. Following the tragic events of September 11, 2001 and the call for greater security for the nation's drinking water supplies, the idea was formed to create a partnership and apply the technology to water security, but has expanded to allow a better understanding and management of water quality.
